I grew up with 9 great brothers and sisters. Yes my parents were catholic, and they didn't have a color television until 1982,... but more importantly, my mom really loved children. With 10 of us, it was rarely boring. When we wanted to play kickball or softball out in the backyard, we didn't need to go round up the neighbors. We had enough people to ensure that the living room window in our house would be broken (and the kitchen window, and the bedroom windows, and the van windows).

 

My dad was the head of the family. We called him "Captain". Although he forbade us to sing in either Publix(TM) or Winn Dixie(TM), he always there to teach us new games and to sing Adelweise. I remember when I was young and he taught me how to swim. At the time, I didn't understand why the burlap sack with rocks was necessary,... and with the kittens scratching my face it was damn-near impossible to keep afloat (HaHa, just kidding!!). Among the games he taught us to play were, Let's Disc the Field, Feed Grinder, and Hay Stacker (ages 8 to 80). Under the Captain's direction, the Richter Family Singers eventually went on to win the 1939 Austrian music festival competition. (I think that was the year that Liesel was going on 17 years old.)
